Building Kits
This chapter covers Quasar’s tools for assembling finished products from component items. Kit building is used by businesses that assemble, repackage, or bundle inventory — bakeries, delis, gift shops, electronics retailers, and anyone who combines individual items into a sellable product.
Kit Concepts
A kit is a single item that is assembled from one or more component items. The component list and quantities are defined on the Kit tab of the Item Master. Examples:
- Gift Basket — Wine + Cheese + Crackers + Basket
- Computer Bundle — Tower + Monitor + Keyboard + Mouse
- Meal Kit — Protein + Starch + Vegetable + Sauce
- Fruit Tray — Grapes + Melon + Strawberries + Tray
Setting Up a Kit
- Create the finished item in the Item Master (e.g., “Gift Basket”)
- Go to the Kit tab
- Add each component item with its size and quantity per build
- Set the Build Qty — the number of finished units produced by one build (usually 1)
- Save the item
All component items must be stocked in the store where you intend to build. Quasar validates this when you select the kit on the build screen.
Item Build
The Item Build screen assembles a finished product from its components. It consumes component inventory and creates the finished kit item — all through an automated Item Adjustment.
| Screen | Access | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Item Build | Inventory → Item Build | Build kits from components |
Build Fields
| Field | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Item Number | The kit item to build. Quasar validates that it has components defined and that all components are stocked in the selected store with positive cost. |
| How Many Batches | Number of times to build the kit. Component quantities are multiplied by this number. |
| Change Kits Built? | Override the total finished quantity produced. Defaults to batch count × Build Qty from the kit definition. |
| Store | The store where components are consumed and the finished kit is created |
| Expense Account | Optional — a GL account to absorb additional build costs (labour, packaging, overhead). When set, the Percent and Flat Rate fields appear. |
| Percent Expense | Add a percentage of component cost as build expense |
| Flat Rate Expense | Add a fixed dollar amount as build expense |
Component Grid
When you select a kit item, Quasar loads its component list into the grid showing Item, Description, Size, and Quantity. Component quantities are automatically multiplied by the batch count. You can edit the Quantity column if the actual build differs from the standard recipe — for example, if you are using a substitute ingredient or have a partial quantity available.
You can also add new component lines directly in the grid. Enter an item number in a blank row to add an ad-hoc component that is not part of the standard kit definition.
Build Workflow
- Select the kit item — Quasar loads and validates all components are stocked with positive cost and on-hand
- Enter the number of batches to build
- Optionally specify an expense account with a percentage or flat-rate amount for overhead
- Verify or adjust component quantities in the grid
- Click OK — Quasar creates an Item
Adjustment that:
- Removes component quantities from inventory (negative adjustment lines)
- Adds the finished kit quantity to inventory (positive adjustment line)
- Posts GL entries: debit finished goods asset account, credit each component’s asset account, debit expense account for build overhead
- A confirmation message displays the adjustment number for your records
- All components must be stocked in the selected store
- All components must be active (not inactive)
- All components must have positive on-hand and a positive cost
- The total component cost must be greater than zero
- If an expense account is specified, either Percent Expense or Flat Rate must have a value
